These days, FDSE investors want the best of both worlds. They want quality shows that will provide them with high levels of entertainment. At the same time, though, they desire programming that can teach them a thing or two about food. It’s a special occurrence when food shows can supply both the former and the latter.

2011 was the year of the grilled cheese. Every where you looked… on or beyond FOOD TV you saw another take on grilled cheese pop up. Who can forget the valient effort of Roxy’s Grilled Cheese on The Great Food Truck Race, The cheesy Best Thing I Ever Ate, Troy Johnson’s cheese Crave, and the classic Throwdown - Grilled Cheese (note to ”Stink Fisher” you didn’t invent “the dome”) It was even named the GQ sandwich of the year.

Shares of anything GC are trading so high that the FDSE marketplace is becoming over saturated with the simple little sandwich. So what’s one more? After calculated market research, the FDSE has compiled the ultimate recipe.

The FDSE-GC

Ingredients

2 Tbsp. Butter (salted)

2 Slices Wonder Light Wheat Bread (I mean how could you possibly go wrong with 1/3 fewer calories than regular wheat bread) :)

1 slice sharp provolone cheese

10 shaved truffle cheese triangles

3-4 oz. fresh mozzarella cheese

1 Large Egg - Wylie Dufresne eat your heart out

Salt & pepper to taste… So tiring to hear Guy say “fresh cracked black” on every single episode Diners Drivins and Dives… Seems a little close-minded. How about an assortment of cracked peppercorns for fun.

Directions

Warm a non-stick cooking surface to 350-400 degrees.

Assemble your cheeses and egg … (an easy way to create cheese shavings is by using a peeler).

Melt 1 Tbsp of butter on surface then begin heating bread.

Flip bread after 25-30 seconds on surface, this will provide a warm surface to assist in melting your cheese.

Carefully layer truffle cheese on one slice, provolone then mozzarella on the other.

After 90 seconds of cooking place lid over cheesed bread.

Now is the time to melt the other Tbsp of butter and begin cooking the egg.

Season Egg with salt and pepper.

After another 2 minutes of cooking remove both slices of bread from cooking surface.

Remove egg and place on top of mozzarella cheese.

Cut each side in half separately to allow yolk to run.

Assemble sandwich and enjoy. Best if dipped in egg yolk while eating.

There you have it, a grilled cheese that can hold it’s own against any competitor. Salty, gooey, earthy, crunchy… Simply divine.

Don't think I can deal with watching another never-ending cycle of crying and embarrassment that is Worst Cooks in Amercica. Our comprehensive report will chart interest levels among upcoming FOOD TV programming, giving you an inside advantage for 2012.

Guy vs. Rachael’s Celebrity Smackdown

Premieres: New Years Day 2012

Premise: Basically a Worst Cook’s in America type cooking competition, but this time with celebrities playing for charity money.

Looks like Guy and Rachael will be coaching the likes of Lou Diamond Phillips and Coolio to culinary greatness. It will be interesting to see if the show will take on a serious or comedic persona. Hopefully somewhere in between. The show could carry that extra comedic edge that recent FOOD TV competitions have been missing; yet the hosts are two of the most polarizing FOOD TV personalities. This show has all the ingredients to produce a hit. Love them or hate them it seems everything Guy and Rachael touch turns to gold.

Interest level: Very Intrested

The Supersizers…

Premieres: January 2012

Premise: An adaptation of a popular British show (for a change) about the history of food. The series looks at the diets of people from different historical eras. Think WW2, Ancient Rome, The French Revolution. The concept seems promising, but considering the show is set to air during Food Network Primetime it will be interesting to see how the Food Network audience will respond to a mostly historical program. Could go either way.

Interest Level: Mild

Masterchef Season 3

Premieres: Summer 2012

Premise: During episodes throughout season two, a casting call was issued for another season of Masterchef. That’s right, more mystery boxes, pressure tests, and elimination challenges are to be held in the future. Masterchef has become a summer staple for FOOD TV fans, but it will be interesting to see if the same trio of judges will be used. Aside from Gordon, a change or addition to the panel could do the show some good. Casting is taking place now, so any home cooks who think they have what it takes, visit www.masterchefcasting.com

Interest Level: Unchanged

Worst Cooks in America Season 3

Premieres: February 2012

Premise: ughhh… another season. Like the aforementioned celebrity showdown… without the celebrities. No word yet on who the acclaimed chef team captains will be, but yes… more episodes of Worst Cooks in America. Shitty home cooks grouped into two teams competing for a cash prize and bragging rights for the team captain. Season 2 was a shock, so season 3 is just a letdown. It will take 2 spectacular new team captains to stir up some interest here. Eric Ripert? Probably not.

Interest Level: Low

Cool Concept

I think your concept is cool and I look forward to seeing what else you come up with.

Cool blog, I love food shows and I'll definitley check out the show at 11:30 of Fridays.
Stock UP — Top Chef

Top Chef (the Berkshire Hathaway of the FDSE) is back for a 9th season, this time taking place across the State of Texas. The first 2 episodes have aired, but the official Top Chef challenge has yet to begin. Instead of the usual 16 competitors, 26 showed up opening day only to find out they would have to compete for their place in the Top Chef house. The “chef-testents” were asked to compete in 3 groups with the Judges (now including Emeril Lagasse) weeding out who they thought were the weaker cooks. The challenge was the expected cook your best dish using a required ingredient in a set amount of time. Aside from the overload of in show sponsorship, the new season looks to be just as exciting as the last 8. At the end of the 2nd episode a new twist was teased as, the show will now apparently continue online after airing, with Head Judge and Executive Producer Tom Colicchio judging a bottom 2 cook off to determine who is sent home. Intriguing.

Stock DOWN — Alton Brown

The new pretentious attitude Alton Brown has put on display has lit up the Food TV forums with utter disgust. His once popular Food Network instructional show Good Eats was moved from primetime to daytime to Cooking Channel all in the same calendar year. While he still holds hosting duties of Iron Chef America and the Next Iron Chef, he has taken on the persona of a host rather than a credible chef.

For the last 9 years Alton’s Thanksgiving turkey recipe has been the most popular on foodnetwork.com, but there is speculation that recipes of Anne Burrell and Bobby Flay respectively could overtake the popularity battle. A sign of dwindling food fame and credibility.

Stock UP — Crave

If you are a food TV fan, you need to set your DVR to crave Fridays at 11:30pm to Food Network. I mean what else could you possibly be recording at that time anyway… right? “Food journalist Troy Johnson takes us on a cross-country journey for the most perfect versions of the foods he craves — think pizza, pork, fried chicken and ice cream.” - Foodnetwork.com

Troy Johnson’s quest to find his favorite version of classic foods has created the sleeper show of the year. During Johnson’s travels he samples different versions of the same food in an informative and salivating manner leaving you wanting whatever food the episode was about. Really bad. This show is a breakthrough program, and FDSE gives a full vote of confidence.

Forecast -This show Will be renewed for a second season. You heard it here first.

Stock DOWN — Spike Mendelsohn

Yes Spike Mendelsohn (of Top Chef Fame) took a giant leap foward when we was deemed “super chef” by the Food Network when they allowed him to compete in the Next Iron Chef Super Chefs with the likes of Marcus Samuelsson, Anne Burrell, and Michael Chiarello; but as expected he was ousted in the first episode. Of all the chef’s competing on the show, he is the only one sans Wikipedia. His restaurant We the Pizza in Washington DC has garnered terrible reviews including one titled “Flee the Pizza” from seriouseats.

Though Top Chef trusted him into Food TV fame, he never did very well on either season he was on. He came in 5th during season 4, and was ousted in the 4th episode of Top Chef All Stars. He never won an elimination challenge on either show.

In essence, Spike’s claim to fame was coming in 5th on Top Chef, 4 seasons ago. As a Food TV star he is nothing short of OVERRATED.

Stock UP — Alex Guarnaschelli

Daughter of cookbook editor Maria Guarnaschelli

Graduate of Horace Mann School (Top NYC Prep School) and Barnard College (Columbia All Girls School)

Executive Chef of Butter in NYC (an absolutely amazing restaurant)

Host of The Food Network’s The Cooking Loft & Alex’s Day off

Judge on Food Network Challenge, Iron Chef America, and Chopped

Current Competitor on The Next Iron Chef

With such an impressive resume, its surprising Chef Guarnaschelli has somehow remained under the radar outside of the Food TV community. Her food is delicious, she currently gets more screen time then Bobby Flay, Paula Dean, and a plethora of other culinary household names, yet hasn’t quite broken through into the mainstream where she belongs.

Her moment is now as she is competing on the Next Iron Chef, and already has a challenge win in the first 3 episodes. It will be interesting to see if she has what it takes to win the competition and finally gain the widespread notoriety she is deserving of. But at the moment she is still gaining momentum, and trading high.
