Managing the Food TV Portfolio

inbetweeneers asked: Wow, this really is the Cadillac of grilled cheese sandwiches. It looks outrageous. And you're right, there has been a plethora of GC featured on food shows. I like your photos, but this time you were supposed to also include a link to an outside source, website or video. Grade: B+

If u click where it says gq sandwich of the year… It brings you to the website.

unicecream asked: What is the GQ sandwich of the year? great quality? and who gives this award?

GQ is a magazine

Food TV Pays Dividends… In Grilled Cheese

Food TV Pays Dividends… In Grilled Cheese

These days, FDSE investors want the best of both worlds. They want quality shows that will provide them with high levels of entertainment. At the same time, though, they desire programming that can teach them a thing or two about food.  It’s a special occurrence when food shows can supply both the former and the latter.

2011 was the year of the grilled cheese. Every where you looked… on or beyond FOOD TV you saw another take on grilled cheese pop up. Who can forget the valient effort of Roxy’s Grilled Cheese on The Great Food Truck Race, The cheesy Best Thing I Ever Ate, Troy Johnson’s cheese Crave, and the classic Throwdown - Grilled Cheese (note to ”Stink Fisher” you didn’t invent “the dome”)  It was even named the GQ sandwich of the year.

Shares of anything GC are trading so high that the FDSE marketplace is becoming over saturated with the simple little sandwich. So what’s one more? After calculated market research, the FDSE has compiled the ultimate recipe.

The FDSE-GC

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp. Butter (salted)
  • 2 Slices Wonder Light Wheat Bread (I mean how could you possibly go wrong with 1/3 fewer calories than regular wheat bread) :)
  • 1 slice sharp provolone cheese
  • 10 shaved truffle cheese triangles
  • 3-4 oz. fresh mozzarella cheese
  • 1 Large Egg - Wylie Dufresne eat your heart out
  • Salt & pepper to taste… So tiring to hear Guy say “fresh cracked black” on every single episode Diners Drivins and Dives… Seems a little close-minded. How about an assortment of cracked peppercorns for fun.

Directions

  1. Warm a non-stick cooking surface to 350-400 degrees.
  2. Assemble your cheeses and egg … (an easy way to create cheese shavings is by using a peeler).
  3. Melt 1 Tbsp of butter on surface then begin heating bread.
  4. Flip bread after 25-30 seconds on surface, this will provide a warm surface to assist in melting your cheese.
  5. Carefully layer truffle cheese on one slice, provolone then mozzarella on the other.
  6. After 90 seconds of cooking place lid over cheesed bread.
  7. Now is the time to melt the other Tbsp of butter and begin cooking the egg.
  8. Season Egg with salt and pepper.
  9. After another 2 minutes of cooking remove both slices of bread from cooking surface.
  10. Remove egg and place on top of mozzarella cheese.
  11. Cut each side in half separately to allow yolk to run.
  12. Assemble sandwich and enjoy. Best if dipped in egg yolk while eating.

There you have it, a grilled cheese that can hold it’s own against any competitor. Salty, gooey, earthy, crunchy… Simply divine.

iseelondonfrance asked: Don't think I can deal with watching another never-ending cycle of crying and embarrassment that is Worst Cooks in Amercica. Hopefully Guy and Rachel can pull off a better version.

Lets hope so.

unicecream asked: The Supersizers show looks pretty interesting but what channel is it on? Also, I agree that they should mix it up a little bit on Masterchef and get a new judge. I'm not a big fan of Joe Bastianich

Supersizers is going to be a foodnetwork primetime show. Agreed on the judging situation.

Futures Report

With a new year approaching and FOOD TV reporting towering capital gains,  the FDSE has seen record sales of futures contracts. Our comprehensive report will chart interest levels among upcoming FOOD TV programming, giving you an inside advantage for 2012.

Guy vs. Rachael’s Celebrity Smackdown

Premieres:  New Years Day 2012

Premise: Basically a Worst Cook’s in America type cooking competition, but this time with celebrities playing for charity money.

Looks like Guy and Rachael will be coaching the likes of Lou Diamond Phillips and Coolio to culinary greatness. It will be interesting to see if the show will take on a serious or comedic persona. Hopefully somewhere in between. The show could carry that extra comedic edge that recent FOOD TV competitions have been missing; yet the hosts are two of the most polarizing FOOD TV personalities. This show has all the ingredients to produce a hit. Love them or hate them it seems everything Guy and Rachael touch turns to gold.

Interest level: Very Intrested

The Supersizers

Premieres: January 2012

Premise: An adaptation of a popular British show (for a change) about the history of food. The series looks at the diets of people from different historical eras. Think WW2, Ancient Rome, The French Revolution. The concept seems promising, but considering the show is set to air during Food Network Primetime it will be interesting to see how the Food Network audience will respond to a mostly historical program. Could go either way.

Interest Level: Mild

Masterchef Season 3

Premieres: Summer 2012

Premise:  During episodes throughout season two, a casting call was issued for another season of Masterchef. That’s right, more mystery boxes, pressure tests, and elimination challenges are to be held in the future. Masterchef has become a summer staple for FOOD TV fans, but it will be interesting to see if the same trio of judges will be used. Aside from Gordon, a change or addition to the panel could do the show some good. Casting is taking place now, so any home cooks who think they have what it takes, visit www.masterchefcasting.com

Interest Level: Unchanged

Worst Cooks in America Season 3

Premieres: February 2012

Premise: ughhh… another season. Like the aforementioned celebrity showdown… without the celebrities. No word yet on who the acclaimed chef team captains will be, but yes… more episodes of Worst Cooks in America. Shitty home cooks grouped into two teams competing for a cash prize and bragging rights for the team captain. Season 2 was a shock, so season 3 is just a letdown. It will take 2 spectacular new team captains to stir up some interest here. Eric Ripert? Probably not.

Interest Level: Low

Cool Concept

I think your concept is cool and I look forward to seeing what else you come up with.

unicecream asked: Cool blog, I love food shows and I'll definitley check out the show at 11:30 of Fridays. But how do you feel about the show Master Chef? It's one of my favorite food shows on television.

Love master chef. I was actually pulling for Christian last season. I know he came of as kind of a D*ck, but Jennifer and Adrien were just as annoying. I love seafood, and I probably would have bought his cookbook.

inbetweeneers asked: Interesting round up of these shows. Do you think that on-line competition between the close-miss competitors on Top Chef will eventually make its way back on to the show?

I havn’t watched the new Top Chef yet, but I’m sure the results of last chance kitchen have to be revealed on subsequent episodes… seems like Bravo is making an effort to gain more online traffic.
